Fans were perturbed when they learned the classic Bullfrog-developed strategy series, Syndicate , would be rebooted in first-person form. The original was a beautiful and brutal affair, set in a cyberpunk world filled with corporate conspiracy. In its reboot, developer Starbreeze manages to hold onto some of those elements that made the original such an intriguing beast

Sins of a Dark Age announced, new team-based RTS from Sins of a Solar Empire dev

Ironclad announced Sins of a Dark Age today, the developer’s follow-up to the epic space armada strategy title Sins of a Solar Empire . The new game will be a free-to-play title, blending classic real-time strategy with the MOBA genre (League of Legends , DOTA 2 ).

Indie dream team building The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire for iOS

Adam Saltsman , the mastermind behind Canabalt , Gravity Hook and Capsule , has rallied an indie dream team to make an original iOS title based on The Hunger Games movie. The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire is Saltsman’s brainchild, backed by production company Lionsgate, and in collaboration with designers/programmers Mark Johns ( Tap Tap Dance ) and Kevin Coulton ( Hot Throttle ), lead artist and animator Paul Veer ( Super Crate Box ), and composer Daniel Baranowsky ( Super Meat Boy , Canabalt ). Saltsman says he was skeptical about taking on the adaptation, as most companies who approach him want to re-skin Canabalt and call it a day

Angry Birds wins a prize for making money through merchandising

Rovio, the people sprinkling stale bread behind Angry Birds , received the Property of the Year prize at the 12th annual Toy of the Year awards (yeah, that’s totally a thing). Rovio won based on the massive amount of Angry Birds physical merchandise it’s released over the past two years, which includes plush toys, backpacks, clothing, phone cases and bacon.

Naughty Dog is looking to make The Last of Us the most realistic fungal-zombie-apocalypse game ever created. Game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann let slip a few details about combat mechanics in a video interview with Game Informer: Health will not automatically regenerate; Ellie, your AI companion, will be intelligent enough to throw bricks and other materials at your enemies, and she won’t break your “stealth” mode; and it may include Uncharted-esque playable cinematics, but in more intimate environments

Skulls of the Shogun starts strategizing this fall

Skulls of the Shogun has been teasing us with cartoonish, captivating strategy since 2010, and as its previous release window of “early 2012″ is rapidly passing us by, we can finally take heart in some solid news. Developer Haunted Temple Studios says it’s “pretty confident” that Skulls of the Shogun will launch on XBLA in the fall. Haunted Temple has been busy adding “a couple very cool features” and “a new platform,” it says in response to a fan’s inquiry on Facebook , and we can expect an official announcement with more information in the coming weeks.
